The List: Scott Approved

The List.

The most up-to-date list of Restaurants with “Scott Approved” beer menus.

What “Scott Approved Means: These restaurants have carefully and thoughtfully compiled a beer list that intelligently compliments the chef’s creations, just as consumers have come to expect of wine lists at high-end restaurants. The staff demonstrates knowledge of beer and food pairing, proper glassware and serving routines, and is able to help diners make intelligent beer choices. Please send me your recommendations!

[Note: beer-centric places like Blue Star Brewing, Freetail Brewing, The Flying Saucer, Yard House, The Friendly Spot, etc. are NOT on the list. These places are obvious destinations for good beer and I don’t feel need listing]

Scott’s Take: I’ve only been twice, but I’m consistently impressed by a diverse beer list that compliments a fun, diverse menu. Stuck with the starter menu last time and enjoyed the variety that ordering smaller bites can provide.
The Monterey
1127 S St. Mary’s St
San Antonio, TX 78210

Price Range: $$
Scott’s Take: This small joint in Southtown definitely big points from me for atmosphere. Cool, quirky, outdoor dining with a beer list that may be bigger than the restaurant itself. Menu seems to change frequently, keeping things fresh.
La Frite Belgian Bistro
728 S Alamo St
San Antonio, TX 78205
twitter: @LaFriteSA
Belgian, French
Price Range: $$
Scott’s Take: It’s been too long since I’ve visited. Quaint seating with walls lined with quirky art set a casual vibe. Not a huge beer list, but appropriately done with Trappist and Abbey offerings. I have a real hard time NOT ordering the moules and frites, available in a number of varieties.
Esquire Tavern
155 E Commerce St
San Antonio, TX 78205
twitter: @esquiretavern
Price Range: $$
Scott’s Take: This historic tavern gets a lot of rightful attention paid to their craft cocktail offerings, but deserve a tip o’ the hat for beer list featuring the area’s best offerings. The food menu is pub grub with a gourmet twist, making for great pub experience.
Big’z Burger Joint (1604)
2303 N Loop 1604 W
San Antonio, TX 78258
Price Range: $
Scott’s Take: Cool, Texas Hill Country vibe in a family friendly setting. Huge outdoor area makes for a good spot to chill for an afternoon. You wouldn’t guess it from the iced-down troughs, but a solid beer list compliments one of my favorite burgers in town. Make it dirty, trust me.
Chester’s Hamburger Co. (Numerous)

Price Range: $
Scott’s Take: Another burger joint on the list, and Chester’s gets its points from a surprisingly vast selection. A solid burger that doesn’t disappoint. This is a favorite spot of mine when time is at a premium, excluding other burger spots from consideration.
The Cove
606 W Cypress St
San Antonio, TX 78212
twitter: @TheCoveSA
Vegetarian, Burgers
Price Range: $$
Scott’s Take: One of my favorite joints in San Antonio for a chill night of live music, good grub, and good beer. The fish and shrimp tacos here are to die for, and plenty of folks rave about the Lamb Burger. Great beer selection but sometimes limited on glassware.
Pizza Italia
2950 Thousand Oaks Drive
San Antonio, TX 78247
Price Range: $
Scott’s Take: Not a frequent visit for me simply because of its relative location to my house, but every time I’ve been I’ve admired a respectable beer selection to go with some tasty pies.
Silo Elevated Cuisine (1604)
434 N Loop 1604 E
San Antonio, TX 78232
American (New)
Price Range: $$$
Scott’s Take: A cool spot on the north side split into two levels. A fairly fancy restaurant on the top level, with a swanky little bar on the bottom level. I’ve only visited the bar down stairs, but they provide plenty of good noshing with available appetizers to go with a nice beer list. A favorite spot for a chill evening drink.

  1. My son asked me to take him to Willie’s Ice House on 281. I begrudgingly took him, expecting to drink iced tea in lieu of a good beer. I was shocked to find they had a pretty decent beer selection and a pretty good burger. By no means haute cuisine but very good.
